What We Liked

The plot of this film is absolutely magnificent, and it really drives the viewers to think, the actors did a phenomenal job playing their parts, and each scene was filled with intrigue.

What We Disliked

Some of the characters were a bit dry, and the movie is VERY long which makes it hard to follow. Also, viewers don't really get to know the characters as well as they should have. The characters go through stages, each stage involving different personas.

Bottom Line

Cloud Atlas is a film that targets a more mature audience, and the following review explains why that is. The movie is rated R and features a fantastic cast of dynamic actors and actresses. There large scope of genre in this film, which attracts a wide variety of viewers. The following review gives a more detailed scope of the film, without revealing too much.

It’s not often that Hollywood produces films with deep subtext

This is a film about the strings attached to each action we make in our lives. No, these are not literal strings, but figurative strings; as in our past actions effect our future. That sums up the entire plot for Cloud Atlas; it follows a series of about 5 different people, entering the stages of their past, present, and future lives in which these 5 people are all different people…  if that makes sense. The entire film is centred around String Theory, and once you come to realize how to follow the film, you will become utterly obsessed.

The film is hard to follow, but good nevertheless; which makes re-watching it for a better understanding much easier. The character names are pretty insignificant, as the viewers don’t really get to connect with them, and each actor plays a series of 3-5 different characters. However, the major actors are: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess.

As a lover of all films that require thought, Cloud Atlas has become an all-time favourite of mine. It has the ability to make you rethink your entire life, and what the meaning of your life is. This film has the ability to turn a Liberian Warlord into a Care Bear. BE WARNED, this film will turn you into a modern-day Socrates. Cloud Atlas easily ranks on my top 5 favourite films, and is definitely on the must-watch list for anyone who has not seen it.

This film also seems to target a more mature audience. An audience that can fully grasp the messages that David Mitchell’s novel put out.  This film jumps from action to musical drama to science fiction, all within the first 10 minutes of the film. So if you are feeling like you need to watch an action-packed adventure, this film may interest you. That said, if you love anything that challenges you to think, this film is definitely worth your while.  I would also greatly recommend David Mitchell’s novel Cloud Atlas.

For me personally, the instant I understood what Cloud Atlas was trying to say, it became my favourite film of 2012. It’s not often that Hollywood produces films with deep subtext that intends to change how an entire populace views life, so we, as viewers, must cherish these rare occasions.
