Release Date:
The Design: All plastic design that has thin bezels so not too big to hold despite its screen size.
The Display: 5.0", Super AMOLED, 1080 x 1920 pixels, 441 ppi pixel density.
The Camera: 13MP camera, f/2.2 aperture with digital image stabilization, back-illuminated sensor, HDR, 1080p full HD video recording @30fps, 2MP front-facing camera.
The Audio: The speaker is located at the bottom of the phone and produces an average sound quality and loudness.
The Call Reception & Quality: Both good.
The Battery: Capacity: 2600 mAh. Talk time: Up to 17 hours for 3G. Standby time: Up to 370 hours for 3G.
The UI Speed: Smooth and fast, with little lag even with several demanding applications open in the background.
The Overall Experience: Samsung's premium smartphone offering of 2013 is a solid phone that has lots of software value-adds and a really good camera. The popular 16GB internal storage model may seem a little small, but after a software update, more of this space is available for and apps, which can now also be moved to an SD card and is expandable up to 64GB. The battery performance is average, but is user replaceable meaning heavy users can easily get through a whole day by carrying an extra battery. The camera is a solid performer, taking really good still as well as video. While the familiar Samsung Galaxy build quality and occasional software lags may disappoint some, the SG4 is definitely one of the best phones to be released in 2013.

How To Buy

Though the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a modern smartphone, everyone has different preferences when it comes to what they want from a smartphone. With that in mind, here are the top things we believe you should be aware of before buying the Samsung Galaxy S4:

  • The plastic body of the phone is prone to cracking and scratching if dropped, put in a pocket with metal coins or keys, or handled roughly. We therefore recommend you invest in a case and screen protector (see accessories)
  • It is packed full of functionality and personalization options which is great for those who use their phones for many different activities, but may be overwhelming for those who have more simple requirements
  • The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a high-end phone and the price reflects that. The advantage of buying a high end phone such as this is that it is more future-proof i.e. has the spec to handle OS upgrades and more resource intensive apps in the future
  • The Samsung Galaxy S4 uses a micro-SIM
