Release Date:
The Design: Professional, sleek aluminium unibody design that can easily be operated in one hand.
The Display: 4.0" IPS LCD, 640 x 1136 pixels, 326 ppi pixel density.
The Camera: 8MP camera, F2.0 aperture, with auto image stabilization, simultaneous HD video and image recording, true tone flash, HDR, 1080p full HD video recording @30fps or 720p @120fps, 1.2MP front-facing camera.
The Audio: Speaker on the bottom of the phone which delivers a relatively loud and clear sound.
The Call Reception & Quality: Both good.
The Battery: Capacity: 1560 mAh. Talk time: Up to 10 hours for 3G. Standby time: Up to 250 hours for 3G.
The UI Speed: Smooth and fast, without any lag even with several demanding applications open in the background.
The Overall Experience: A beautiful looking phone that is a pleasure to use, even with one hand. iOS 7 is user-friendly and while it still doesn't offer as much personalization as Android, welcome additions include the new control centre and overhauled notifications area. While the battery charges quickly, it will only last a full day for light user, so it's worth keeping a charger to hand in times of medium to heavy use. As with previous iPhones, the camera is a strong performer with the addition of auto image stabilization and burst mode. Media consumption is a pleasurable experience with a good screen and speakers, though some people might find the 4 inch screen small in today's market of large screen smartphones and phablets.

Beautiful, modern design, user-friendly OS with some useful additions, good camera, fingerprint scanner.

Battery life isn't great and it's non-removable, non-expandable storage, expensive.

How To Buy

Things to Consider

Though the iPhone 5S is a high-end smartphone, everyone has different preferences when it comes to what they want from a smartphone.  With that in mind, here are the top things we believe you should be aware of before buying the iPhone 5S:

  • The aluminium body of the phone is prone to denting and scratching if dropped, put in a pocket with metal coins or keys, or handled roughly. We therefore recommend you invest in a case and screen protector (see accessories)
  • The back of the phone is non-removable which means that you can’t expand the storage, can’t replace the battery and repairs are more difficult and expensive than on most other phones, especially without specialist tools
  • The iPhone 5S uses a nano-SIM
